Student Activity: Domino Train

Domino Train is a fun way to revise basic note names and their values with your student. Just a word of caution: It might get a bit rowdy if you contest against a rather competitive contender. My young padawan loved this game so much she insisted on a second round despite her victory, and thus we played both versions. The second elicited excited squeals as her brain raced against time - and her teacher - to secure her second triumph.

Objective:

  • To fortify recognition of basic note names and their time values

Directions:

There are 2 ways to play this game:

1. Turn-by-Turn

  1. Shuffle and distribute the cards equally between teacher and student.

  2. Student takes the first turn and places a one random card on the table (this also increases the student's chance of winning with one card less on his/her hand).

  3. Teacher places a card on the table, where the face of the new card must match either of the two faces of the previous card. Refer to picture above for visual reference.

  4. Student repeats step 3 and the domino train lengthens.

  5. If a player doesn't have a match, he/she skips a turn.

  6. The game ends where there are no longer any possibilities of matches from either player, or when either player runs out of cards.

  7. The winner is the player with the least number of cards, or the first player to be out of cards.

2. Fast and Furious

  1. Shuffle and distribute the cards equally between teacher and student.

  2. Student takes the first turn and places a one random card on the table (this also increases the student's chance of winning with one card less on his/her hand).

  3. At the count of 3, both teacher and student promptly create as many matches as they could. The goal is to clear the cards in their hands as fast as possible.

  4. The game ends where there are no longer any possibilities of matches from either player, or when either player runs out of cards.

  5. The winner is the player with the least number of cards, or the first player to be out of cards.

All eyes on deck in her frenzy to connect her train rapidly.

So fun she insisted to play again, this time with her sister.
